PhD Studentship
Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship available from October 2008 in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, School of Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.
Area: Audio-Video Fusion for Digital Hearing Aid Design
Supervisor: Dr. Naomi Harte

Background: The advancement in digital hearing aid technology in the past decade has been enormous. A new approach to the development of speech processing algorithms for hearing aids has been the use of models of the auditory nerves (AN) to model the effect of processing on the impaired ear response. This allows assessment of how well particular algorithms restore the response compared to that of a normal auditory nerve.

This project will exploit existing AN models to support the development of new algorithms for hearing aids. In particular, all humans naturally use lip-reading to help understand speech. This work will explore the use of joint audio and visual processing to develop improved algorithms for hearing aids. Hardware implementation of hearing aid algorithms is especially challenging due to low power and system delay constraints. This will be another area of focus.

The aim of the 3-year PhD project is:
• To develop quantitative measures to assess the improvement in auditory response for the AN model outputs
• To investigate efficient lip-reading algorithms to visually detect the onset of voiced speech in humans to support audio processing techniques
• To develop improved hearing aid algorithms fusing audio and video processing
• To design a real-time prototype.

The studentship will cover University fees (at EU-level) and provide a stipend of Euro16,002 per annum. Candidates should have a minimum of a 2.1 degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering or closely related discipline.
Informal enquiries to Dr. Naomi Harte by email at Interested candidates should include a short CV, state why they are interested in PhD-level research, and provide the names and contact details of two academic referees.
